Problem:

On one day, a store sold 16 boxes of rice, restocked the shelf with 22 boxes, sold 27 boxes, restocked with 30 boxes, and sold 15 boxes. There are now 21 boxes of rice on the shelf. How many boxes were on the shelf at the start of the day?

    The answer is this: 27.

    You work backwards: 21 + 15 - 30 + 27 - 22 + 16.

    Explanation:

    Let's say x is the number of boxes at the start of the day that will give you this equation

    x-16+22-27+30-15=21

    If we substitute the equation to make x the subject you will get

    x=21+15-30+27-22+16

    x=27

    You will also find that if you just work backwards from the final number of boxes and adding the boxes sold and minusing the boxes restocked you will get the same answer
