    The Opium conflicts were fought in China in the 19th century between the Qing dynasty and the western countries. The first war was between China and Great Britain between 1839 - 42 and the second war escalated between 1856-60. The second war was between Great Britain and France against China.

    When the war ended, China was asked to make payments as indemnity to the British governments and their merchants.

    A form of free trade was imposed on them which granted British citizens legal rights to do whatever they wanted while remaining in China.

    A "most favored nation" clause was imposed on them which ensures that any right gained by another country would automatically apply to Great Britain
