The Palace of Versailles is considered one of the most extravagant royal estates in the world. Louis XIV created the palace and burned the receipt so nobody would know the true cost. He made it mandatory for many in the nobility to spend time at the estate with him so he may keep a close eye on them and influence them to his agenda. The nobility may have been awe struck and intimidated by the grandness of it, whilst the lower and middle class may look on with envy at their own issues being ignored which in turn lead to the French Revolution.
