The Northern general who was put in charge of accomplishing total warfare in the southern states was William T. Sherman.

    Explanation:

William Tecumseh Sherman was an Army officer, businessman, educator and writer from the United States.

He served as a general in the North Army in the Civil War. He served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863, during the battles that led to the capture of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River and the defeat of the Southern armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Grant followed as leader of the North's army in the south. He captured the strategically important city of Atlanta. This was seen as a sign that North's victory was imminent, and it did much to secure the re-election of Abraham Lincoln as President that same year. Sherman subsequently embarked on a campaign through the states of Georgia and South and North Carolina, the March to the Sea, causing so much damage that the South's ability to continue the war was seriously impaired because of Sherman's total warfare strategies. In April 1865, all the southern armies of Georgia, the Carolinas and Florida, surrendered to him.
