How were the social classes divided in Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas?

    They were divided according to the origin of the people: people born in Europe (Peninsulares) on top of the hierarchy, then their children born in the New World (criollos), then mixed children of Europeans and other peoples, then the Indigenous and other people of colour.
