Why was the issue of slavery so important to the delegates of the Constitutional Convention?

    Many of them had slaves. It was a big deal whether or not to mention slaves in the Constitution. If the Constitution outlawed slaves, many of the leaders of the slave states at the time, would have left the union. These territories were crucial to the successful formation of the nation. They obviously decided not to, in order to keep the nation together.
