How did Democratic government contribute to the development of a distinctly American culture?

The main way in which the Democratic government contributed to the development of a distinctly American culture was that it was a "direct democracy"--meaning that every eligible citizen could vote directly on issues pertaining to the state. This of course meant that the state itself was a reflection of its citizens.
