It has a different writing system and it transmits ideas in a a very different way from what we do in Western languages. There are no common roots between Indo-European languages and Mandarin, or broadly, the numerous languages of China. Except for neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam that were heavily influence by Chinese culture, this has meant an obstacle for communication with other peoples.
