The British have had an enormous impact on everything Indian. Firstly, technology. Indians were introduced to different types of machines and made use of them. One major contribution of the British to India is the introduction of various transport options and communication media. Railways, airways, post, telegraph and print media were among the boons granted to India by the British, indirectly. English education made a good section of Indians broad-minded and open to social and religious reform. The fact that we are asking questions and answering them in English is a thriving example of Lord Macaulay's efforts (though he intended the introduction of western education for purely British purposes, no Indian welfare in mind).

However, the British plundered India's resources, made the common man poorer by the day by levying unreal taxes and caused communal tension. They split the nation and generated great unrest.

So as most things are in the world, the British rule too, had a positive and negative impact on India.
