How do the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate get chosen to run for presidential office? Each is nominated by his or her respective party. They are chosen by the House of Representatives. They are nominated by their state governments. Each is chosen by the governor of his/her home state.

    Both the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate get chosen to run for presidential office through nominations by his or her respective party, through a primary election. This is the meaning behind a government "for the people, by the people"
