He was the first president of independent Indonesia, after this country gained independence from Netherlands.

    Explanation:

He founded the National Party of Indonesia in 1927. Colonial Dutch authorities arrested him for nationalist policies in 1929 and banned the party, which he continued to lead in 1931 after his release from prison. He was arrested again in 1933 and interned until the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II in 1942, after which he apparently maintained a loyal relationship with the Japanese authorities in the interest of the national liberation movement. He became head of state after the declaration of the Indonesian Republic in 1945. The Netherlands did not recognize the independence of its colony of the Netherlands East Indies, and intervened militarily. Sukarno was arrested in late 1948 and returned to power after the Indonesian-Dutch agreement was signed in June 1949 when Indonesia became sovereign state. He was elected President in 1963, but was discharged from office in 1967, two years after General Suharto's military coup.
