The main outcome was the return of Russia as an independent country together with Belarus and Ukraine. That happened in December 1991. The three states formed the CIS, or Commonwealth of Independent States. The exit of Russia from the Soviet Union was a mortal blow to the Communist state that had existed since 1917 (though the formal name of Soviet Union was adopted in 1922). The breakup of the USSR is the end of the Cold War.
