Why were the Sandinistas important to Nicaragua?

    They were Soviet-backed revolutionaries that hoped to take over the country and spread communist ideas. They were the people that the Reagan-backed Contras were fighting in the mid-1980s that lead to the Iran-Contra Affair. Over all their influence was negative.
