How does the relationship between the federal government and state governments differ from the relationship between state and local governments

The system that governs all of the United States, regardless of which state or city you live in is called Federalism. In Federalism, there is no central power from which all laws and all responsibilities and power emerge. On the contrary, power is divided and distributed between a central government, called the Federal government, state governments and local governments. The link between these three levels comes from the U. S Constitution, which is the law that governs all of the Union and takes precedence over all other laws. In the beginning of U. S history, conflicts arose between states and the Federal government because it seemed as if state laws could overstep and overshadow the U. S Constitution. However, this changed through time. Nowadays, there is a form of hierarchy created by the law in which, as long as it pertains to fulfilling or improving, the accomplisment of what is established in the U. S Constitution, the Federal government and its laws and responsibilities take precedence over state and local laws. States and even local governments must fulfill the laws and regulations established by the Federal government, as long as this is framed under the U. S Constitution. But at the state level, there is also a hierarchy in which state law will take precedence over local law and government. Thus, while the Federal government rules and oversees the whole of the nation, it is not the sole power; instead, this power is handed down also to states who then also distribute it between the local governments. States can only mandate over citizens and visitors of the state AND the local governments within the state and local governments can only rule over their specific localities.
