    As part of the process of readmission to the Union as outlined in the Reconstruction Acts, states had to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the US except as a form of punishment for breaking a crime. The readmitted states had all been slave states prior to the Civil War and thus this caused a great deal of animosity to rise when they were forced to ratify the amendment; nevertheless, they had been defeated.
