When roads began to be built and auto travel developed in the 1920s, the Fred Harvey Company responded by providing toursist with an auto tour through Santa Fe (a) and the rest of northern New Mexico.

Instead of going out of business, the company adapted to the new travelling trends and created the "Indian Detours" in 1926. These were sightseeing tours aimed at entertaining travellers by driving them through the southwest's landscapes, cities, and Native American territories and ruin sites. The car drivers were trained as tourist guides.

The Indian Detours quickly became the most successful tourist auto tours at the time in the country, which enabled the company to prosper.
