C--Alexander ended serfdom

The Crimean War proved to Russia they were behind and needed to modernize. For Tsar, Alexandar II this meant ending the feudal system of serfdom. Serfs were bound to the land bound to a lord or land owner. Because these people were forced to be labor for farms there was no incentive to create new farming technology and the labor could not be used for factories. Alexander believed this was the step needed to become a modern nation.
