Why was there tension over who should rule the empire after the death of Muhammad's?

The main reason why there was tension over who should rule the empire after the death of Muhammad's was because he did not have any son. Muhammad also did not name any person as his successor and this added to the confusion. There were several people who wanted to take the place of Muhammad after his death.
