The main difference between the Old Guard and the Half-breeds was in the way the saw the reconstruction and the the spoils system. Old Guard were the members of the Republican Party who wanted the radical reconstruction while also emphasizing the spoils system which means that the party would give civic jobs to its supporters and their close ones. The Half-Breeds were in contrast for more moderate reconstruction while also were in favor of reforming the spoils system.
