Tensions between the United States and Mexico began with the arrival of American settlers in Texas, still in the 1820s. Mexico had gained its independence from Spain in 1821 and, therefore, had inherited all the territories that were part of the Vice - Kingdom of New Spain, of which Texas was a part.

This process triggered the Texas Revolution in 1836, in which there were significant battles in certain places, such as Béxar (current city of San Antonio) and the fort of the Alamo. The decisive combat took place in San Jacinto, when Mexican troops were definitively defeated by the Texan rebels.

With the defeat of the Mexican government, Texas separated from Mexico and declared its independence as the Republic of Texas. Small sea battles between the Mexican government and Texas forces continued until the 1840s, but Mexico was unable to regain control over Texas at any time. An important consequence of this conflict was the disruption of relations between Mexico and the United States.

From 1845 onwards, American President James K. Polk (1845-1849), imbued with the spirit of "manifest destiny", showed interest in expanding American territory even further. The target this time was the Mexican state of California. The US government offered Mexico $ 25 million to sell the states of California and New Mexico. The offer was rejected by the Mexican government.
