What could have prevented the civil war?

The whole civil war started because of a shot fired from one of the sides, so that startled or alerted u may say, and made them cautious and even curious or angry to know why the shot was fire and they must have thought it was war so if that shot was not fired than it could have stopped the civil war from happening.
