How did the line of succession change with the arrival of islam?

The line of succession changed from matrilineal to patrilineal with the arrival of the Islam. Under the matrilineal system an individual is considered to be from the same descent as his or her mother where as with the patrilineal system the descent was changed to paternal side and deriving the family name.
