The religious revivals of the 19th century were called revivalists. At that time the movement was called the Great Awakening. This movement believed that reforms in society must occur to eliminate evil. People anticipated the second coming of Jesus Christ and a new millennial age will rise in society.

Many people converted their religions because the movement reflected Romanticism, something that appealed to the super-natural. People back then strongly believed of the idea of a new age and enlightenment and they reject skeptical rationalism and deism.
