The Spanish Monarchy and Portugal claimed and took control of the largest areas of land in the Americas (in plural) as part of their empires. The Spanish conquest started in 1492 with the arrival of Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón). In 1494, Portugal and Spain signed the Treaty of Tordesillas that divided the Atlantic into two parts, one going to Spain (western half) and the other going to the Portuguese. In 1493, pope Alexander VI issued a papal bull dividing the New World between Spain and Portugal.
