Answer:Gandhi was born in the upper-middle class, which by all standards must have had some privileges even under the British domain. In South Africa he faced another reality, where Indians were treated as inferior as a collectivity regardless of their caste. It is perhaps faced with this discrimination that Gandhi developed his ideas on the treatment of the untouchable. The book doesn't mention, but in South Africa, Gandhi acted as a representative of Indian traders, who were Upper-Middle class and faced the attacks of South African whites precisely because of their wealth. South Africans were hostile with these wealthy immigrants. However, it was in South Africa that Gandhi tried his ideas of civil disobedience and nonviolence.
