    This is true, but more so in an economic sense than a physical one. The Civil War brought and end to slavery, which had been a crucial part of the South's economy. Reconstruction began, which was meant to restore the South without slavery.

    True, the South was much weaker than the North and the living conditions there was poor. The South mainly relied on agriculture and had little manufacturing, which the North had a lot of. A lot of slaves were killed in battle, which they relied on to farm crops like cotton.
