The answer is B. L'Ouverture was a renowned soldier fighting for the slave insurgency in Haiti. When the British and Spanish tried to get control Haiti, the French believed they needed to gain the loyalty of the black population to keep their colonial rule intact. This led to the French National Convention abolishing slavery in Haiti. When this occurred, the slave insurgency allied themselves with France and L'Ouverture led the French in ridding Haiti of British and Spanish influence. This put him in position to gain a lot of power in Haiti. The main event that sparked his rise was the French deciding to abolish slavery, answer choice B.
