There was a westward expansion and the rivers that were located westward like the Mississippi and the Chattahoochee were important for travel and for moving goods. In 1769 a Scottish inventor named James Watt invented a steam engine that other inventors would take as the heart of their own creations. One was Robert Fulton who engineered the first successful steamboat called the Clermont using the Watts engine in 1807. An earlier attempt had been made by John Fitch in 1787, but they were too expensive to be bought and operated.
