The correct answer is e. the barracks emperors, when Rome had no fewer than twenty-six emperors in about fifty years.

They were called the barracks emperors because they were usually military leaders who seized the throne based on their success with the army. None of the barracks emperors ruled longer than 2 years on average which cause a lot of instability. The one who managed to end this was Diocletian who led the country into a new era.
