    Where New Orleans is key was for the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase which included pretty much the entire Mississippi drainage. There were no railroads, roads or even wagon trails back then ... so goods would be shipped up and down the river.

    And not just the Mississippi ... but the tons of other navigable rivers that flow into it--the largest and most important of which was the Missouri--which was navigable even by paddle wheelers all the way to Great Falls, Montana before they dammed it.
