The three main impulses were: anti-monopoly, social cohesion, and a faith in knowledge. The concept of anti-monopoly held that too much power in too few hands could lead to corruption. Social cohesion was the concept that holds that people are all interconnected and the welfare of one is dependent on how everyone else fares. Faith in knowledge applied the natural and social sciences to the betterment of society.
