The communist countries in Europe banded together to form what was known as the "Warsaw Pact", so called because it was founded in Warsaw, Poland. It was in response to NATO. In the Warsaw Pact, there were eight countries. It, however, was dissolved with the fall of the USSR in 1991. Do keep in mind that the USSR counted as one country, but it encompassed many of the modern day Eastern European countries.
