The us involvement in ww1 has been argued as unnecessary by some historians. after Wilson's first term in office he campaigned for reelection by saying he kept america out of the war but eventually he was the one who went to Congress to ask them to join the war. the us has conflicts of interest since the start of the war, they continued to trade and give loans to Britain but not germany. many people thought of the war as being a war in Europe, it was the Europeans problem. America joining the war made no sense to some people even if there were some casualties what with the Germans sinking I believe about 5 american ships. I wouldn't say these critics were "unamerican" they just saw the war as unnecessary.
