    Slaves formed one - eighth part of the American population. A very small number was taken to the Americas from Africa (not directly via Spain Portugal and the Atlantic sea). The slave population in North America however, increased naturally, which resulted in an adequate supply of the Slave to the slaveholders from plantations itself and not from the ships. As the sugar plantation increased in Brazil, it demanded more slaves than before. A large number of slaves primarily lived in the south.
