In what ways did ethnic diversity play a role in the development of the Swahili Coast, compared to in Ethiopia?

The Swahili have played a big role as middle man between east, central and South Africa, and the outside world. Trade contacts have been discovered from as early as 100 AD, by some early Roman writers who visited the East African coast in the first century. I wish i could tell more but i do not know.
