What role did geography play in the development of the colonies

Geography affect everything we do, even today. As an example, industry developed first in New England because of the fall line. The fall line is where you start to get hill big enough to run mills. In new England, the fall line was only a few miles inland. In the south, the fall line was 100s of miles inland. So mills were built first in New England because they could be closer to the coast, than lets say south carolina. Richmond VA and Columbia were built on the fall line. It was the first place inland where you could build a dam to power a mill.
