The Japanese hated the Soviets as much as the Germans did. Both sides knew a confrontation with the USA was inevitable. The Japanese wanted an Asian empire. Their sites were set on China, Mongolia and the Pacific. So they went with a divide and conquer approach. If the Russians are busy in the west then they cant interfere with us in the east. The Germans figured that the Japanese could draw off some Russian forces to the east or at the very least keep the USA and the British busy in the Pacific. It was a marriage born out of convenience more than anything else.
