    The correct answer is 12 tiers of stone. In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor lays 12 tiers of stone to wall up the niche and entombing his friend Fortunato alive. Before placing 12th stone, Montresor drops burning torch and burns Fortunato.
