In the mid-nineteenth century, what inspired so many middle-class Protestants to participate in reform movements?

    They were inspired by their belief in a social gospel that every person could be saved through repentance, revivals and conversion. And the establishment of many reform movements were designed to get rid of the evils of society before the Second coming of Christ could happen.
