Coins were traditionally made from wood back in the old times used as a currency, but they got more and more valuable based on what material they were mad out of. The nickel is made out of, well nickel so it has a higher value than penny which is made out of copper. They were made for a system of trading and buying. They needed something worth value to trade for like gold
