What new direction did civil rights leaders take in the mid-1960s?

    The new direction is probably the non-violent approach that advocated equality through peaceful means such as sit ins or marches. They wanted to show that they are civilized and should be respected, that African-Americans are no different than the white people who were often evil and unjust towards them.
