    U. S did not want to break relations with other nations and called for peace.

    Explanation:

When the war broke out in Europe in 1914, President Wilson decided to remain neutral in the war and announced that U. S. would not participate in the war. They called for peace and did not want strain relations with other nations. Wilson opposed the war firmly.

But German U-boats constantly attacked American ships during trade across Atlantic Ocean. It was after sinking of Lusitania, which resulted in the death of 128 Americans, the pressure was built on Wilson to let U. S enter the war.
