What does the Chinese government attempt to do by limiting internet use

The Chinese government limit internet usage to eliminate outside forces (such as the media). They do this because they do not want any ideas going against their society. For example, if a gay male sees other gay men in America being free to express their sexuality, they will want their country to become more accepting as well.
