Who was supported during the cold war for being anti-communist even though he had a secret police and violently repressed by his own people?

    There were many such rulers throughout the world. A famous example was Francisco Franco from Spain who was a fascist and held a tight fist around everything in the country. He didn't participate in WW2 but was a fascist and supported Germans unofficially. After the war everyone hated him but since he was a great supporter of anyone who opposed communism he quickly got friends on the western part of the world even though he was a fascist.
