    Georgia was spared significant military action until 1863. The Confederate Army was able to defeat Union forces at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. The following year, the Union army invaded Georgia and ultimately captured Atlanta in late 1864.

    On September 19-20, 1863 - thr Confederatr Army of Tennessee, comanded by General Braxton Bragg suceeded over the Union Army of the Cumberland under General William Rosecrans. Rosecrans' army retreats to the supply base at Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was known as the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia.
