In the case Miranda v. Arizona (1966), the Supreme Court established the idea that law enforcement must:

have a warrant before searching or arresting a suspect.

not question suspects unless they are under arrest.

present a judge with probable cause to determine if a warrant can be issued.

inform suspects they have the right to keep silent and have an attorney present with them during questioning.
