During the 1844 presidential election, who were the candidates, and what was the main issue?

    Answer: The candidates were James K. Polk (Democrat party) and Henry clay (Whig party)

    Explanation:

    James K. Polk defeated Henry clay and became our 11th president in the U. S. A the main issue (as always) was slavery and how the the U. S didn't want to annex Texas because they wanted the equal amount of free and slave states. 1844 was a very controversial time!

    Democrat James K. Polk defeated Whig Henry Clay in a close contest turning on the controversial issues of slavery and the annexation of the Republic of Texas. President John Tyler's pursuit of Texas annexation threatened the unity of both major parties. Annexation would geographically expand American enslavation.
