Although in those years of segregation in the Southern states many girls marched and supported the civil rights movement, they did not get enough credit because they were relegated to second place in the fight for civil rights. It was a time when men dominated the public scene and were not easy for women to have the recognition of their tenacity.

Richard Devlin is a history professor who works at the University of Rutgers, in New Jersey. He has done research about this issue and the results of his work can be read in "A Girl Stands At the Door."
