What was the purpose of the missouri compromise apex?

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an attempt by The U. S Federal Government to maintain balance between states that allowed slavery and those that did not. Missouri was allowed to become a part of the Union as a state that allowed slavery while Maine changed its status to being a non-slave state. This Allowed the country to keep an equal number of slave having and not slave having states.
