The answer is A. The North demanded that federal troops march to Virginia after the shelling of Fort Sumter. They hope that this would end the rebellion. In response to their demands, General Irvin McDowell led Union troops to Bull Run where they faced a Confederate army that was led by General P. G. T. Beauregard. The Union planned a surprise attack on the Confederate flank. Though poorly managed by officers in the field it put the Confederates at a disadvantage. The Union troops were too slow to take positions and reinforcements led by Confederate General Joseph Johnston arrived and the tide turned against the Union. At the time Confederates led by General Thomas Jackson stood firm in fighting the enemy and earned the nickname "Stonewall’. A counterattack by Confederate forces forced the Union troops to withdraw. The result was a victory for the Confederates.
